Andres Serrano, I knew him from this fantastic photo he made for Metallica's album, Load
the original artwork was called "Semen and Blood III", the visual was actually made of bovine semen and blood between two sheets of plexiglass.
Andres said about it: "Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I think the cover of Load was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this crazy, stupid shit that they felt they needed to do."
The thing is... I LOVED that cover, that visual from the very beginning. It was kinda disgusting, looked like blood and saliva to me. But the movement, the shape, it seemed very alive. The colours too.
Once I learnt it was made of blood and semen, I found it even more beautiful. Just regret it was of bovine origin and not human.
Maybe this Piss Christ is his most famous work, because of the controversy it brought...
(Recently in Avignon, the photography frame was even destroyed ... The gallery director plans to reopen the museum with the damaged works "so people can see what barbarians can do ").
This Piss Christ is actually a photo of a plastic crucifix immersed in the photographer's own urine.
Serrano defended his work as a criticism of the "billion-dollar Christ-for-profit industry" and a "condemnation of those who abuse the teachings of Christ for their own ignoble ends". His work was also damaged in Australia, and neo-Nazis got violent at a Serrano exhibition in Sweden in 2007.
Enough controversy to make it really interesting to me. Besides, honestly I love that pic. I did not know how it was made, but I found some warmth in it, the light, everything, I liked it. Now I know it's a Christ in urine, it makes it crazily interesting! I love it.
Yes it's shocking, but the criticism are not always against religion (mine would be of course!)... Some say it's the Christ's glory despite the world ugliness, etc.
Sister Wendy tells her view in the most adorable and open-minded way here.

Yes, shocking and provocative... but it pushes people to talk, and I do love that!
You can see more of his work here
I love his work on weapons, guns, the "objects of desire" series.. (btw, I love the titles he gives to his art pieces, so very important!)
I'm still wondering about his next show ... It's pretty extreme... huhu... : ))
I was surprised by that Evil shit ... not by the shit itself (which looks like a yummy brownie, really), but the title of it "Evil shit". Makes my imagination running already. Which Evil ? And if Evil can produce such shit, it makes Evil very real... you can build a whole story around. I like it. ** shrugging **
